Week One Blog - Transmediation

 Transmediation

2/08/2025

Transmediation, as a word or concept, was not something that I had ever heard of or explored before. I had learnt something of a similar nature as a child within primary school, while exploring new terms and ways of accessing multimedia texts. However, nothing I had learnt felt as in-depth as the Mills (2011) text explains.

I was surprised to explore the importance of this development for children's learning, and how the incorporation of exploring texts in different ways with children, from as simple as turning a written text into a picture, has on their understanding of the wider world around them (Mills, 2011). It was also through learning the definition of transmediation described in the text written by Mills (2011) that I have been able to personally understand how I continue to explore transmediation both in the everyday world and within my teaching career.

An image that resonated with me while exploring this text, and through the movie and book 'Storm Boy', was one that I had taken myself, reflecting on a photo of the beach (to keep it contextually relevant). Using the concepts of transmediation, I recognised how I could focus on an image and use it to tell a story, including one that was suitable for children, as well as modifying it to suit an older or younger audience. It was also through the use of the image that I acknowledged that it could be used as a background for a book or comic and could include the use of people/characters to assist in creating a multimodal text. It was through this acknowledgement that I also understood the creativity that was required for this to occur, and how I allowed myself to think freely and creatively. I also connected that while children use transmediation, they are also developing other skills that support their development in other topics such as maths, science, English, etc. An example of this can be seen in the course readings, when Margaret was moving the character using the app, she was developing the concept of space and movement (Mills, 2011).
