Week Four Blog - Film Production
Film Production
24/08/2025
Through exploring the materials this week, I grasped a new perspective on not only the different aspects/considerations when making a film, but also on the way that books can make a person seem and the inferences made when reading a non picture book including the opinions and formations that occur through the use of words with characters (especially by exploring Fingerbone from Storm Boy).
By being introduced to the 2019 Storm Boy film, I have acknowledged the different portrayals of characters through the book as well as through both of the films, coming back to Fingerbone. He is portrayed as a wise man who seems to be of an older age, with a wrinkled face and not of any attraction. However, we can see within the 1976 Storm Boy film that Fingerbone is a younger man with long hair and not a wrinkle to be found. Although it is tricky when producing a movie that all characters are likely to match the description of the books. However, in this case, they could have found someone whose looks aligned more with the book. Based on this inability, I believe that the producers did this with the intent to be different and portray him in a way that was more culturally appropriate than that of the book.
To explore the use of film and video production further, the lecture introduces us to ways that film can be used to develop and create emotions within characters and elaborate on the particular scenes that are shown from the 2019 Storm Boy movie. When shown the movie scenes, connections between the 1976 and 2019 Storm Boy movies can be made. The particular characters can be navigated between each movie, demonstrating similarity. But to separate the movies from each other, the settings and places seen in the movies have been made different. It is also evident in the 2019 Storm Boy film that the film angles, experiences, sounds, settings, and characters all demonstrate a level of maturity that is not evident in the 1976 Storm Boy movie. This includes the ways that the camera moves to portray emotions, along with other visual techniques that are relevant to today's time. It is no lie and through my own opinion that people's attention spans are becoming less engaged with certain topics, and therefore producers of today's time need to remain conscious of this when producing film or other multimodal texts and therefore the difference between the 2 films needed to be adapted to suit.
